with the support of the Institutional Fund for Scientific, Technological and Innovation Development (FORDECYT-PRONACES) *, announces its Activity program to be held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Querétaro, National Museum of World Cultures and Museum of Mexico City

Under the direction of a multidisciplinary team of artists and scientists, a new stage of Genetic Mosaic in Mexico is presented: a view from the arts (www.mosaicogenetico.mx) with a program of activities to be held between the end of September of this year and May 2022, in three venues (in chronological order): the Museum of Contemporary Art Querétaro, the National Museum of World Cultures and the Museum of Mexico City.

THE PROJECT

Genetic mosaic in Mexico: a view from the arts is a space where scientists, artists and society share their knowledge, vision and worldview to reflect and actively discuss what genetic ancestry studies are, their ethical, legal, and social implications and personal. It seeks to take advantage of scientific knowledge and other knowledge as a source of social and cultural transformation.

Humanity is made up of a mosaic of genomes. In turn, each person is also a mosaic, the result of their genetic inheritance. We are a mosaic of mosaics.

·        The study of the hereditary material allows us to know this genetic mosaic.

·        The genome contains all the information necessary for the growth and development of an individual and is found in each of the cells.

Beyond where we are born or live, all humans are connected and made up of the same genetic material, where a small percentage makes us different and yet unique. Therein lies our diversity.

·        From a biological point of view, there are no borders.

·        In our diversity is our richness as a species.

·        Your identity goes beyond genetic material.

Why «a look from the arts»?

Because it allows us to reflect on scientific knowledge from the creative, the emotional, the critical, the personal and the social, through a multiple perspective. Art and science in complicity.

THURSDAY 23, 18:00 HRS.

Conference with Dr. María Antonia González Valerio, on “Cultural Biology”. In her words: “Biology, with the help of the rapid growth of biotechnology and bioinformatics, now encompasses disciplines as varied as art, philosophy and the social sciences. This expansion leads us to consider that there is not one biology, but different cultural biologies. Biology goes through cultural practices and ways of being in the world. It must be placed in a different light that does not consider it only from science or from epistemological problems in order to be able to interpret it according to its current cultural and social scope. What continues to be at the center of reflection is the question of life and nature, and in that question we will have to focus on what follows. «

BACKGROUND

Genetic mosaic in Mexico: a view from the arts was born in 2018 as an independent project, with the support of ACT (Arte, Ciencia y Tecnología, UNAM-SC), with the purpose of expanding the dissemination of scientific knowledge on the genomic studies of ancestral composition, taking advantage of the creativity of a group of artists of recognized prestige (equal number of women and men), committed to producing and lending works and / or pieces from a study with these characteristics , they were given a result and they were given responsible and informed support on various issues, including some of the possible implications (social, legal, ethical, among others). The works were protected and will now be shown in this great exhibition.

The process that the project has followed –between December 2018 and February 2020– included the studies, the delivery of results, forums for reflection, several public presentations and a procedural exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Querétaro (February-June 2020) , in addition to the fact that all the information was digitally assembled and can be consulted on the digital platform www.mosaicogenetico.mx and on the project’s social networks.

At the beginning of this 2021, Genetic Mosaic in Mexico: a view from the arts, was benefited in the Call for the Establishment of a Network of Spaces of Universal Access to Scientific, Technological and Humanistic Knowledge through Art (project number 315481) , of the Institutional Fund for Scientific, Technological and Innovation Development (FORDECYT-PRONACES), with which he set up this new program of activities, which will culminate in the group exhibition at the Museum of Mexico City.

Allies

It is important to highlight that, from the beginning of the project, and with a renewed commitment, we continue to have the unconditional support of the National Institute of Genomic Medicine (INMEGEN), as well as the National School of Anthropology and History (ENAH), through his team from the Molecular Genetics Laboratory, and to these, the science dissemination agency, Big Idea, has joined.

We want to thank Héctor Exandro, for his support and participation both in pieces, as well as in technological development and permanent advice; to Leonel Sagahón Campero, for updating our logo and his advice on visual communication, to Néstor Quiñones, for his participation and the facilities for using the La Quiñonera space; to Pablo Sámano for his support on digital marketing issues; Julián Monroy for his permanent advice on strategy and management; and especially, to the management teams of the three museums (and their higher levels, for all the support), as well as to the entire INMEGEN team. Finally, we thank the more than 50 artists who will participate in the exhibition and in some cases, in the public program of activities, for their enthusiasm and multiple contributions to help us get to this point.
